Phonics & Early Reading
At Willenhall Community Primary School we want to give our pupils the tools to be confident, enthusiastic readers that enjoy books. Through a well-planned pathway of progression, we offer a consistent approach to teaching our pupils how to read and write. Our pupils learn to read effectively and quickly using the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme.
The programme is for:
- Pupils in Nursery to Year 2 who are learning to read
- Any pupils in Key Stage 2 who need to catch up rapidly
For pupils in upper KS2 requiring rapid catch up we use Fresh Start. This program follows on from RWI but teaches pupils at their challenge point. It is a simple but powerful program of intensive support.
In Phonics pupils:
- Decode letter-sound correspondences quickly and effortlessly, using their phonic knowledge and skills
- Read common exception words on sight
- Understand what they read
- Read aloud with fluency and expression
