Maths

It is our intent that all children at Willenhall are passionate about mathematics. We strive to ensure that the children are aspirational, confident and fluent mathematicians, with a sound conceptual understanding of mathematics. Our aim is that all children can reason, problem solve and think critically, communicating their ideas clearly using a variety of representations and mathematical language confidently.

Careful curriculum sequencing ensures that children are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to reason and problem solve successfully. Willenhall’s mastery approach is underpinned by Five Big Ideas: Representation and structure; Mathematical thinking; Variation; Fluency and Coherence.

The curriculum is sequenced carefully using White Rose’s Small Steps (KS1 & KS2), Mastering Number (R, KS1 and Years Three, Four and Five) and Mastery of Number (Nursery). Lessons in KS1 and KS2 are carefully structured, to include recaps and retrieval of prior learning, opportunities to explore, high quality models, fluency foci and opportunities to reason and problem solve.

In addition to this, pupils have access to Numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars to support their development and knowledge of number facts and times tables both in school and at home (a link for which can be found below).

For further guidance on how you can support your child to enjoy and succeed in Maths, please talk to your child’s class teacher.
